Website Change Detection: what it is, how it works and why you need it

Complete guide to website change detection — the technology behind automated website monitoring. How it works, what it detects, and how to use it.

What is website change detection

Website change detection is the process by which an automated system periodically checks a web page and identifies any difference from the previous version. That can be a text change, a price change, a visual update, or a structural change.

At its core, it's the digital equivalent of an employee manually checking hundreds of web pages every day — but automated, instant, and error-free.

OmniWatchGuard combines multiple detection methods (text, DOM, and API) to cover content changes on sites that allow automated access.Try it free for 10 days.

How website change detection works, technically

1. Crawling and snapshot capture

At the configured interval, the system fetches the page and captures its state. On the Starter and Pro plans this happens via a simple HTTP request (fetch) — fast and resource-efficient, but for pages built with React, Vue, or Angular that only render their content after JavaScript runs in the browser, a plain fetch often sees only an empty HTML shell. On the Agencyplan, OmniWatchGuard automatically detects such pages and switches to a real (headless) browser that executes JavaScript and captures the content actually displayed. For more on this, see thefull guide to monitoring React, Vue, and Angular websites.

2. Normalization and noise filtering

Not every change on a page is relevant. Dynamic ads, timestamps, visitor counters, user sessions — all of these change on every reload without being a "real change." OmniWatchGuard applies smart filters to eliminate these elements and keep only meaningful content changes.

3. Diff comparison

The new snapshot is compared against the previous one using diff algorithms (similar togit diff for code). The system identifies exactly what text was added, changed, or removed.

4. Classification and alerting

Detected changes are classified by type (price, stock, text, DOM) and sent as an alert through your configured channels. The entire process, from detection to alert, takesunder 30 seconds.

Detection methods: text vs. visual vs. DOM

MethodWhat it detectsAdvantagesLimitations
Text (HTML)Changes in text content, prices, stockPrecise, fast, easy to interpretDoesn't see purely visual changes (colors, layout)
Visual (screenshot)Any visible change on screenAlso catches CSS changes, new imagesCan produce false positives on animated elements
Structural DOMAdded/removed/moved HTML elementsDetects technical changes (tracking, scripts)More technical, requires careful filtering
API / JSONChanges in API responsesMost precise for structured dataRequires a publicly accessible API URL

OmniWatchGuard uses text, selected-element (DOM) and API / JSON detection. It does not do screenshot-based visual comparison. You choose the detection type that fits each monitored page. See thefull feature list.

Key use cases

  • Competitive analysis — tracking competitors' price, stock, and offer changes. Full guide.
  • Compliance and legal — monitoring T&C updates, GDPR, usage policies
  • eCommerce — stock alerts, promotional prices, availability. Full guide.
  • SEO and technical — detecting changes to meta tags and structure
  • Security — detecting code injections, defacement, unauthorized script additions
  • Journalism and research — tracking changes on government and public institution websites

Website change detection vs. web scraping

Many people confuse the two concepts. The key difference:

  • Web scraping extracts structured data from a page at a specific point in time. It's a one-off operation; the result is a dataset.
  • Website change detection compares the state of a page over time. It's a continuous process; the result is an alert whenever something changes.

OmniWatchGuard performs change detection — not scraping. It doesn't extract or store personal data from websites; it only detects changes and notifies you.

Why choose a dedicated solution instead of building your own

Building an in-house change-detection system involves: a headless browser (Puppeteer/Playwright), proxy management to avoid being blocked, snapshot storage, a diff system, an alert queue, monitoring, and ongoing maintenance of the entire infrastructure.

OmniWatchGuard provides the checking, comparison and alerting infrastructure, fully configured (we respect robots.txt and do not bypass anti-bot protection), fora fixed monthly price, with zero maintenance on your end. Full comparison: OmniWatchGuard vs. alternatives.
